The Beast
In June 2020, we started to casually shop for travel trailers. We simply started by going to different RV lots around our hometown and seeing the different options that were available. We really started to narrow our search to a bunkhouse travel trailer, knowing our Ford F-150 would be able to tow a lighter weight pull behind trailer. We had a few different manufactures in mind, but eventually narrowed it down to Forrest River. We had ultimately decided on a Grey Wolf 26DBH based on the floor plan and price. We found a local dealer that had one in stock, and went to take a look. As we were headed back into the building, the sales person "noticed" a model he hadn't seen before, that he knew had a large outdoor kitchen, a feature Brian really wanted. He opened that outdoor kitchen door, and Brian was sold. Sign the papers, he found his RV.
We settled on a Grey Wolf 29TE. This model has a 3-bed bunkhouse (with a door!), a super slide that holds the dinette and sofa, a full bathroom, and master bedroom. It's a lighter weight trailer, but comes in at 37ft in length with a low profile. Brian was a high school band director for over 13 years and had spent many years towing the band trailer -- so the length really did not intimidate him like it did me! I, however, was absolute nervous wreck the whole way home from dealership. It was a LOT of RV for our 1st travel trailer.
Pros & Cons
We definitely have enjoyed the Grey Wolf 29TE for our 1st RV. We have put over 3,000 miles on the rig traveling to Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia, South Carolina, and Georgia in our 1st year of ownership. We definitely know what we love, like, and dislike about the RV at this point. It has definitely given us non-negotiables when we decide to upgrade from this travel trailer.
Pros:
The bunkhouse has a door. I cannot emphasize this enough -- I can shut the door on the mess that my boys create in less than 24 hours.
The bathroom is next to the master bedroom.
The dinette is a U-shaped dinette.
The outdoor kitchen is MASSIVE. It has a side-by-side fridge/freezer, sink, cabinet, drawer, sink, ice-maker, and a propane cooktop.
Access to the bathroom from the outside.
Cons:
It's 37ft in length. It's a LONG trailer -- we have to be really careful with reservations because we simply won't fit into all sites in state parks.
It has a low profile. We bottomed out on our 2nd major trip and bent the triangle drag frame on the passenger side. (I, partially, blame the campground because they knew the length of our RIG and still sent us through 2 ravines to get to our site).
The sofa sucks. We would definitely prefer some type of reclining sofa vs. the jack-knife sofa. It's so uncomfortable.
1 air-conditioning unit. We are both members of various social media groups for our manufacturer, and model -- and lots of people have a 2nd a/c unit, or are pre-wired for a 2nd a/c unit. While we are able to cool the rig, from about 1pm to 4pm in direct sunlight during the summer -- the a/c struggles.
